A I

The mobile revolution. Geopolitical power shifts. A radically altered global economy. The world is changing, and so is the way that people campaign for their rights. To remain effective, Amnesty International’s (AI) International Secretariat needs to adapt to that change. That’s why we’re opening a regional office in Kenya. And why we need you to lead it.

ABOUT THE ROLE

In East Africa, our International Secretariat team will tackle regional issues like freedom of expression, human rights violations in the context of armed conflict, forced evictions, international justice, and abuses in the criminal justice system. As Regional Director in Nairobi, you will develop and adapt our global strategies within that context. You’ll lead your multifunctional team to develop and deliver effective research, campaigns, communications, growth, fundraising and relationship plans. So you’ll need to create a culture of collaboration and integration as you establish the office, support your staff and take accountability for managing resources. At the same time, you’ll be guaranteeing that your team comply with all the relevant legislation, policies and practices whilst adhering to AI’s standards of independence, impartiality and credibility.

ABOUT YOU

A politically astute, inspirational and resilient leader, you’ll bring us expert knowledge and experience of human rights in addition to a well-developed understanding of the international human rights framework. You’ll be fluent in English and French, and have the relationships and appreciation of political context and the East African rights situation that come with living in the region. You’ll also have a leadership background within a similarly complex organisation. So you’ll be a strategic thinker who can create plans, manage staff, allocate resources and maintain a strong network of government, NGO and media contacts. Additionally, you’ll have the communication, presentation and advocacy skills needed to represent AI to a variety of audiences, plus the credibility to influence them and effect positive change.

ABOUT US

Our aim is simple: for every person to enjoy all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards. Independent, impartial, international and influential, we campaign to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated. Already our network of over three million members and supporters is making a difference in 150 countries. And whether we’re applying pressure through powerful research or direct lobbying, mass demonstrations or online campaigning, we’re all inspired by hope for a better world. One where human rights are respected and protected for everyone, everywhere.
