Alpha Oumar Konare, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU), urged the approval of African diplomatic passports on Wednesday at the opening of the 9th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council in Banjul. Civil society organisations from 19 African countries met in Banjul, the Gambia, 26-28 June 2006, in advance of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government, to discuss ways of improving compliance with commitments made under African Union treaties, with particular reference to the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).

A coalition of civil society organisations have written to the president of the AU and the AU Comission to express concern about the need to tackle the HIV and AIDS pandemic on the continent. They state that they are "anxious that the forthcoming Seventh Ordinary Summit reinforces the integrity of the AU, and confirms the strong leadership on HIV and AIDS demonstrated by African leaders at the Abuja Summit both in 2001 and again in 2006."
