1. AFRICAN ENTREPRENEURS HELP SHRINK GENDER DIGITAL DIVIDE
UNIFEM established a Global Advisory Committee this month comprised of African IT entrepreneurs living in the Diaspora and in Africa, as well as representatives from the private sector and the UN system. The Committee of 12 experts will work with UNIFEM on a programme to help bridge the gender digital divide in Africa by advocating for women’s access to information communication technologies (ICTs) to improve their livelihoods.
In a continent with 54 countries and over 700 million people, Africa only houses one percent of the world’s Internet users. The Committee will help develop and guide UNIFEM’s new programme, which will provide training for African women’s organizations and business associations in the use of ICTs, help them create business partnerships and access financial support. Members of the Committee include African women technology leaders such as Amolo Ng’weno, founder of AfricaOnline; Yussur Abrar, CEO of Warsun International Communication; Rebecca Enonchong, CEO of Appstech; Awo Quaison-Sackey, President and CEO of AQ Solutions; and Gisele Yitamben, founder and Executive Director of the Association in Support of Women Entrepreneurs (ASAFE).
