Meilleures salutations !

Benin adopted a law which authorize the ratification of the Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa!

Lomé, Togo, 7 January 2004. The follow-up committee on the Protocol informed us that yesterday January 6th at 6h30, the National Assembly of Benin voted unanimously the law N° 2005-04 authorizing the ratification of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) on the Rights of Women in Africa.

The instrument of ratification must still be officially deposited at the African Union to be effective. Let us remind you that in addition of Benin, Guinea, Mali, Senegal and Nigeria in West Africa are in the same situation. When the deposits will be done, the total of ratification will be ten (10), of which five from West Africa. The Protocol will come into force thirty days after the deposit of the fifteenth (15th) instrument of ratification.

Encourage African States Parties of the AU to respect their word given at the last Assembly of States and Government in the solemn declaration in favour of equality of men and women. The States Parties have then engaged to ratify no later than the END OF 2004 this judicial instrument of great importance for African women. Year 2005 has started and still some countries are behind schedule concerning action to do so the Protocol gets sign and ratify. The first step is to sign. Until December 7th, thirty three (33) countries already signed, of which 13 out of the 16 countries in the West Africa sub region. So maintain the pressure so that the process for ratification goes through all the necessary steps until the deposit of the instrument.

WiLDAF/FeDDAF West Africa has started a new campaign with the aim of obtaining the ratification of every country of the sub region for the middle of February 2005. A follow-up of this campaign will be soon available the WiLDAF/FeDDAF-West Africa website.

Congratulations to the Beninese follow-up committee and women and men involved in the file for the work they have done. We encourage them to continue until its implementation.

Let us all be alert to keep on the pressure. Don’t hesitate to let us know about your action.

Yours sincerely,
