Human Rights Watch, the international monitoring and advocacy organization, seeks a director to lead its division on women’s rights. The Executive Director of the Women’s Rights Division is the organization’s chief strategist, advisor and spokesperson in relation to its work around the world on the human rights of women. Since its founding in 1978, Human Rights Watch has become the largest
U.S.-based international human rights monitoring and advocacy
organization, known for its in-depth investigations, its incisive and
timely reporting, its innovative and high-profile advocacy campaigns,
and its success in changing the human rights-related policies of the
U.S. and other influential governments. HRW’s Middle East and North
Africa Division (formerly Middle East Watch) was established in 1989 to
monitor human rights in the Middle East and North Africa (from Iran to
Morocco).

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, WOMENS RIGHTS DIVISION (NEW YORK or WASHINGTON, DC
OFFICE)

Human Rights Watch, the international monitoring and advocacy
organization, seeks a director to lead its division on women’s rights.
The Executive Director of the Women’s Rights Division is the
organization’s chief strategist, advisor and spokesperson in relation to
its work around the world on the human rights of women. She or he is
also a key member of the organization’s central management.
DESCRIPTION: The Executive Director, through the supervision of a
growing staff of nine, is responsible for overseeing the collection of
detailed information on human rights practices affecting women, the
publication of reliable, comprehensive, insightful and timely reports on
those practices, and the use of those reports to generate international
pressure to curb abuses. She or he represents the organization
frequently before the international press and broadcast media, meets
with government and other high-level officials, coordinates with allied
organizations, local NGOs and other Human Rights Watch program areas,
sets programmatic priorities, directs the planning and execution of
research and related advocacy initiatives, provides final editing of
reports and other written interventions, and takes part in research and
writing. The Executive Director also assists with fund raising by
helping to identify and recruit donors. She or he will preferably be
based in the organization’s New York headquarters, although a posting in
its Washington, DC office is possible.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of human
rights issues, a commitment to promote human rights, and substantial
experience on women’s rights issues. They must have a demonstrated
ability to lead a team of talented professionals, to think creatively
and strategically, to exercise sound political judgment, to ensure the
highest quality research, to take the initiative consistently to stay a
step ahead of advocacy targets, to articulate women’s rights issues
effectively and persuasively, to write, edit and speak fluently and
forcefully in English, to assist in raising funds, and to perform in a
fast-paced, activist environment meeting multiple, simultaneous demands
while paying close attention to detail. Fluency in one or more languages
other than English is desirable.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Competitive salary will be commensurate with
experience. Human Rights Watch offers generous, employer-paid medical,
dental and pension plans, and 20 vacation days per year.
