End Violence Against Women Update - January 31, 2002

One or more research awards will be made by the SOUTH AFRICAN GENDER
BASED VIOLENCE AND HEALTH INITIATIVE (SAGBVHI) at the First Gender
Based Violence and Health Conference, South Africa, 17 - 19 April
2002.

The award is intended to encourage research in specific areas of gen-
der based violence and health. Applicants are invited from research-
ers based in South Africa. Proposals are requested for research in
one of the following:
* health workers experiences of gender based violence in their per-
sonal lives and its influence on their professional lives;
* impact of being asked about domestic violence by a health worker on
women's lives;
* the acceptability of HIV testing after rape and what influences de-
cision-making regarding whether to start post exposure prophylaxis
and compliance.

The award is non-renewable and covers one year and budget should not
exceed ZAR 100,000. Applicants are given only to researchers based at
not-for-profit-status organizations. Proposals must be 5 pages long
and include one page of each investigator and 20 line summary or pro-
posal.
The proposal must be structured as follows:
* introduction,
* review of literature,
* aim, specific objectives,
* methods, ethics, outputs, capacity development, timeline, budget.
