JUSTICE AND THE GLOBAL REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH:
Philosophical Underpinnings for Campaigns against Global Apartheid

University of Chicago philosophy professor Iris Marion Young is in
Johannesburg and has agreed to give an informal presentation to civil
society activists and intellectuals interested in global justice.

Her work, which establishes alternatives to the theories of the late Harvard
philosopher John Rawls, is internationally celebrated for pushing forward
the limits of democratic theory. She has published on feminism, municipal
democracy, desegregation and global governance. As an activist, Iris works
with the Chicago Jubilee campaign and the Africa Initiative of the American
Friends Service Committee, promoting the World Bank Bond Boycott.

She will be sharing ideas with Jubilee South Africa and anyone else
interested in the question of how we justify our demands for the global
redistribution of wealth, and what modus operandi might help achieve our
goals.

As Jubilee South Africa continues to advocate reparations and sue Northern
banks and corporations for their apartheid-era profits, a sound
philosophical argument is ever more vital.

Please join us for a discussion on Wednesday, April 9 at 2pm at Jubilee
South Africa national office, ninth floor, east wing of Auckland House, 185
Smit Street (corner Biccard), Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

For information, contact Jubilee office, 403-7624 or Jubilee secretary
George Dor, 648-7000.
