Dear colleague
I have pleasure in attaching Mango’s 2002 calendar of financial management
training for NGOs working in the relief and development sector (a rich text
format document). This year we are running training events in Kenya,
Zambia, Bangkok and the UK.
Please pass on these details to colleagues and partner organisations who
might also be interested to learn of Mango’s unique and tailored training
service.
Mango is a UK-based NGO with a mission to improve financial management
practice in relief and development NGOs. If you are so far unfamiliar with
Mango's training service, you may be interested to know that:
* Mango’s training team have many years of practical experience working in
the field and are supported by local facilitators on overseas events.
* All Mango’s training courses use a highly practical, hands-on approach to
build both the technical skills and confidence of course participants.
* Courses are supported by comprehensive materials and tools which can be
applied in the workplace or used to train others.
* Training takes place in small groups (limited to 8-16 participants
depending on the course) to maximise learning opportunities in an informal
atmosphere.
* Where courses are sponsored, bursaries are offered to poorly resourced
local NGOs/CBOs to encourage access to this high quality training.
We offer five core courses designed for specific training needs:
* FM1 Practical Financial Management for NGOs - Getting the Basics Right
Introduction to financial management for managers and finance officers of
local NGOs. It covers ‘the building blocks’ of financial management:
keeping accounts, financial planning, internal control and financial
monitoring.
“This course was very relevant to my organisation’s activities.”
“Excellent and detailed materials.”
[Kenya, October 2001]
* FM2 Strategic Financial Management for NGOs
This is a new course designed to follow on from FM1, picking up the more
advanced aspects of financial management for NGOs. It is aimed at senior
managers and those responsible for the strategic management of programmes.
The workshop focuses on strategic financial planning, including financing
strategies for sustainability, building reserves, the challenge of core
costs and managing donor relationships.
* FM3 Working with Southern Partners - Financial Management for Programme
Managers
This is for non-financial project or programme managers who work with and
support local partner NGOs. Course content includes an introduction to the
building blocks of financial management; assessing financial capacity;
challenges in the field; and financial monitoring.
“Excellent! It was real not just theory.”
“I would recommend this training to any project/programme manager.”
“Very good course - on the right level and covering relevant issues.”
[London, June 2001, November 2001]
* FM4 Introduction to Financial Management in the Field
Aimed at accountants who have little experience of the relief and
development sector. Its purpose is to help transfer skills to the NGO
environment. It covers the practicalities and challenges of accounting in
field-based operations, including establishing manual systems, internal
control issues, multiple donor reporting and the impact of culture.
“Excellent all round introduction to for new [field accountants] that was
honest and realistic.”
“Quite practical with a good balance of accounting and non-accounting
issues.”
“It equips me with the tools of tackling the job in the field.”
[Oxford, May 2001]
* TFT1 Getting the Financial Management Message Across: A short course for
Finance Trainers
This is for those who have to train others - such as field staff or partner
NGOs - in how to manage funds in relief and development projects. It
requires a background in finance but no previous training experience.
“I really want to become able to deliver a training course in the way I saw
this week!”
“Practical examples were easy to follow, understand and absorb.”
“Even complicated issues become simple if explained right.”
[Romania, March 2001]
This year we are also offering The Building Blocks of Financial Management
as a series of 6 stand-alone one-day modules. The modules can either be
followed in full to build up a comprehensive course in financial management
for NGOs, or followed selectively to fill in ‘gaps’ in current
understanding.
