COSATU’s response to the resignation of
Tony Yengeni
October 4, 2001
The Congress of South African Trade Unions welcomes
the resignation of Tony Yengeni as the ANC’s chief whip.
We cannot afford to have anyone remain in a position of
political leadership who is tainted with corruption, no
matter how worthy his past. As a country, we must
show zero tolerance for corruption, influence-buying and
patronage, which undermine both our democracy and
our economy.
Because of the importance for the fight against
corruption, the Federation has been observing the
process around the investigation with keen interest. We
feel that so far, government through the Public
Prosecutor, the Public Protector and the audit process
has demonstrated its good faith in ensuring the arms
deal is not affected by corruption.
We wish to express our appreciation of the efforts all
these agencies have put into this investigation process.
We view this as a visible affirmation of the ANC
government’s commitment to ending corruption.
