Sager Fellowship 2003-2004

Students in the Master’s degree program in Sustainable International Development (SID) consider the state of world development, probe issues that affect future generations, and broaden skills necessary to plan, negotiate, implement, monitor and evaluate development programs. The SID Program has gained international recognition as an innovative degree, examining models of development for their achievements in reducing poverty and inequality, raising quality of life and conserving the environment. SID seeks fresh thinking about complex relationships, bridging areas of concern reserved traditionally for scientists or social scientists, policy makers, human rights advocates, or development practitioners.

The program suits early to mid-career development professionals from governmental or non-governmental institutions who manage projects that promote enterprise creation, poverty reduction, biodiversity and natural resource management, refugee settlement and disaster mitigation, food security, and civil society.

All students spend their first year in residence at The Heller School at Brandeis University deepening their understanding of development theory and practice. They also learn or improve basic skills in management, economics, statistics, ecology, geography, and spoken and written English, as well as other areas of development concern. Students are trained in the use of computers for academic and professional work. Depending on their courses, they learn word processing, spreadsheets, statistical packages, graphic presentations, and geographic information systems. Students work with a Research Librarian throughout the year on using Internet databases and library resources.

SID has an innovative professional curriculum that includes:

§ a year in residence studying with senior researchers and field level development practitioners, and
§ a second year field project, internship, or advanced study applying and evaluating methods and models of development.
