Your Excellency,
We are writing on behalf of the World Association of Newspapers and the World
Editors Forum, which represent 18,000 publications in 100 countries, to express
our serious concern at the disappearance of four journalists.
According to reports, Grody Dorbor, editor of The Inquirer newspaper, Oscar
Dolo, Nyahn Flomo and William Quiwea, all local correspondents for the radio
station Talking Drum Studio-Liberia, disappeared about a fortnight ago in the
country's eastern and central regions, where government forces are fighting
rebels.
Mr Dorbor and Mr Quiwea had reportedly travelled to Zwedru, in Grand Gedeh
county, to cover the troubles, while Mr Flomo is a correspondent in Ganta, in
the Nimba region. At the time of his disappearance, Mr Dolo was in Gbarnga, in
the central county of Bong. He reportedly fled to Ganta after fighting broke
out.
We respectfully call on you to do everything possible to investigate the
disappearance of the four journalists and to ensure their safe return. We urge
you to take all steps necessary to provide an environment in which journalists
are able to exercise their right to inform without fear of violence.
We look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Seok Hyun Hong
President
World Association of Newspapers
Gloria Brown Anderson
President
World Editors Forum
