With its unmistakable setting, Cape Town is a prime international tourist venue with the best infrastructure in Africa and it is home for much of South Africa’s publishing industry. The South African book market is estimated at GBP45 million (US$65 million) annually. Cape Town has a wealth of booksellers and a tertiary student population of close to 50 000. The venue for the event, the Baxter theatre complex, is on the University of Cape Town campus, with a resident student population of 20 000. The university boasts many of South Africa’s leading academics, among them acclaimed novelists and essayists Professors J.M. Coetzee and Andre Brink, and there are three bookshops attached to or adjacent to the campus.

We do hope you will join us there, or in Harare for the second leg of ZIBF2002.

Yours truly,

David Brine
