Ivory Coast: Missing journalist Kloueu Gonzreu found dead
The Writers in Prison Committee of International PEN is deeply concerned at the
killing of Kloueu Gonzreu, whose body was discovered on 19 March 2003 in the
Toulépleu region. Gonzreu (51), a correspondent with state-run Agence ivoirienne
de presse (AIP), had been missing since 11 January 2003. At the time, he was
reported to have been captured by Liberian soldiers aligned with the Ivoirean
government.
In an article in the 30 January 2003 issue of the pro-government newspaper Notre
Pays, Gonzreu had been accused of being an apologist for the rebels in the civil
war currently ravaging the country.
Gonzreu was also a teacher as well as working for the Red Cross. The bodies of
two other Red Cross workers and his son, Thierry Gonzreu, were also found with
the journalist.
International PEN calls upon the Ivoirean authorities to carry out an exhaustive
investigation into the killing of Kloueu Gonzreu and to bring those responsible
to justice.
