Mango’s highly regarded finance training programme for NGOs will be returning to Zambia in August 2003. This year Mango will run the ever-popular introductory course – Practical Financial Management for NGOs – and, for the first time in Zambia, the follow-up course on Strategic Financial Management for NGOs. Both courses are aimed at managers in small to medium sized NGOs. No previous financial management experience or finance qualifications are required for attending the course – just a desire to understand how financial management contributes to successful programme management. The courses will be held at the Zambia Centre for Accountancy Studies (ZCAS), Lusaka. Although designated as non-residential, good quality and reasonably priced guest accommodation is also available at ZCAS.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT TRAINING FOR NGOs IN THE SOUTHERN AFRICA REGION
We are pleased to announce that Mango’s highly-regarded finance training programme for NGOs will be returning to Zambia in August 2003. Once again, we are delighted to be running the programme with support from the Association of Accounting Technicians.
This year we will run our ever-popular introductory course – Practical Financial Management for NGOs – and, for the first time in Zambia, the follow-up course on Strategic Financial Management for NGOs.
FM1: Practical Financial Management for NGOs: Getting the Basics Rights: (5 days)
Monday 11th to Friday 15th August 2003
FM2: Strategic Financial Management for NGOs: Managing for Financial Continuity and Security (3 days)
Mon 18th to Wed 20th August 2003
Both courses are aimed at managers in small to medium sized NGOs. No previous financial management experience or finance qualifications are required for attending the course – just a desire to understand how financial management contributes to successful programme management.
The courses will be held at the Zambia Centre for Accountancy Studies (ZCAS), Lusaka. Although designated as non-residential, good quality and reasonably priced guest accommodation is also available at ZCAS.
Some brief details of the courses follow below, and full course outlines available on request from Barbara Johnstone at [email protected], who will also be happy to deal with your booking enquiries.
Do note that we prefer to work with small training groups, so places are limited and early booking is advisable.
Please be kind enough to pass on this information to any of your colleagues in the region who might be interested to benefit from Mango’s unique and effective training. Thanks for your help.
With all good wishes,

· FM1 Practical Financial Management for NGOs - Getting the Basics Right
This 5-day FM1 course is aimed at non-finance managers and at finance staff wishing to expand their knowledge and understanding of financial management in the NGO sector. The course introduces participants to the four ‘Building Blocks’ of financial management:
- financial planning and budgeting
- accounting records
- financial reporting and monitoring
- internal control
It also looks at managing relationships with auditors and donors, and how to integrate financial management into programme operations.
Here’s what participants on previous FM1 courses have had to say:
“I can’t believe I actually enjoyed learning about finance, but I really did!”
“This course was very relevant to my organisation’s activities.”
“I had little knowledge on financial management but now my mind has been opened I have learnt a lot which I will take back to my organisation.”
“Excellent and detailed materials.”
· FM2 Strategic Financial Management for NGOs
FM2 is a practical and challenging course ideal for any NGO manager concerned with the financial sustainability of their organisation. It is also suitable for programme managers who advise local partners on strategic financial management issues. It is an ideal follow-up to the FM1 course. The key topics include:
- How financial sustainability is achieved in practice.
- How to build a financing strategy, establish reserves and manage core costs.
- Practical techniques for assessing risk and planning for uncertainty.
Previous course participants have commented:
"Without doubt, the best financial management course I have ever attended."
“Extremely useful course on a very important subject.”
“Really helped to clarify my understanding of financial sustainability.”
· Facilitation
All Mango’s training courses are practical and participatory in style. And because we are an NGO, and all of our facilitators have worked in the field, our courses are highly relevant to the NGO world. The August courses will be directed by Alan Murray, Mango’s Financial Management Consultant/Trainer, who has wide experience of advising NGOs on financial management issues all around the developing world.
· Course Fees and Bookings
FM1: 495 GBP (approx 790 USD)
FM2: 375 GBP (approx 600 USD)
Course fees include all tuition, course manual and materials, lunch and refreshments, course photograph and certificate. Guest accommodation is also available at the training venue at additional cost.
