Sustainable Energy Planning for Cities

The Sustainability Institute (University of Stellenbosch) and Sustainable Energy Africa (SEA) are offering an intensive 6-day accredited course on Sustainable Energy Planning - For Cities in September this year.

This course can form part of the Masters Programme in Development Planning and Sustainable Development or it can be attended on its own as an Executive Course in the School of Public Management and Planning's Programme in Sustainable Development.

Aim of the course:

To build the capacity of local authorities and related stakeholders (business sector, national government, and non-governmental organisations) around South and Southern Africa to develop and implement local sustainable (sustainable from social, economic and environmental perspectives) energy strategies (policies, plans and projects) and implement them. A comprehensive course pack is provided.

Who should attend?

A sustainable energy plan integrates long-term energy planning into the overall local policy making framework in a city. This course is for local government officials, politicians and policy makers and project implementers from South and Southern Africa working on energy, planning and environmental issues as well as representatives of organisations working with cities on energy and related issues such as sustainable development. The course will run over 6 days from Monday 13 September to Saturday 18 September 2004

The full course fees are R6 250 (lunch & supper included; accommodation not included)

Course approach:

Sustainable Energy Planning for Cities combines practice, experience, skills building and rigorous intellectual inquiry. It is cross cutting and going beyond traditional academic boundaries in a way that includes international expertise, case studies, project work, group assignments, individual reflection and practitioners' own experience. This training course falls within the broader established SEED programme (http://www.sustainable.org.za/SEEDHome.htm) that provides ongoing information exchange, networking opportunities and support. Research and practical experience from the SEED programme and SEAs (project implementer) work developing City Energy Strategies (http://www.sustainable.org.za/CESConference/CESOutcomes.htm) with key local governments is incorporated into the course. Students will receive regular post-course communications on upcoming activities and issue based newsletters (SEED Updates).

Course outline:

· Introduction to Sustainable Cities, the debates and issues - locating South and Southern African Cities,
· Introduction to energy and cities and to integrated energy planning global and local urban developments trends, global and local energy trends, global and local energy agreements, policies and strategies,
· Sustainable energy planning for cities - what, why, when and how future planning scenarios,
· Global and local city energy case studies,
· Energy sectors and project-level city case studies (poverty, water, energy, transport, waste) - energy projects, financing, key debates,
· Simulated city energy planning group work and presentations,
· Individual assignments,
· Daily reading,
· Site visits,
· Relevant videos and Class debates with key informants.
