The theme for this year's World Telecommunication Day (WTD), 17 May 2002, is "ICT for all: empowering people to cross the digital divide". In keeping with this theme and the strong gender component that it implies, the TFGI would like to take this opportunity to highlight issues related to gender and the digital divide on academic as well as active local levels, via concrete case studies, best practices and ideas that fit into the theme.

The International Telecommunications Union Task Force on Gender Issues (ITU
TFGI) is calling for articles to be used in conjunction with the ITU
promotion
of World Telecommunication Day (WTD), 17 May 2002.

The theme for this year's WTD is "ICT for all: empowering people to cross
the
digital divide". In keeping with this theme and the strong gender component
that
it implies, the TFGI would like to take this opportunity to highlight issues
related to gender and the digital divide on academic as well as active local
levels, via concrete case studies, best practices and ideas that fit into
the
theme.

When submitting articles for consideration, please consider the following
subjects in relation to the overall theme:
1) women as a new market,
2) access for women and education
3) policy issues and empowerment of women.

In addition to articles on the above themes, the TFGI would also be
interested
in receiving accounts of how your own organization and/or local community
will be celebrating/publicizing WTD.

The articles selected will be used in various ITU, international and local
publications to raise awareness on the WTD theme as well as for general
publicity for the event. If you believe that a newspaper or magazine in
your area would be interested in publishing promotional materials for this
year's WTD please kindly contact the TFGI with the pertinent information.

The TFGI looks forward to receiving your submissions by 1 March 2002 and to
the
successful promotion of gender during this year's World Telecommunication
Day.
