Solidarity on combating AIDS

Talking about Africa is fashionable. This year's G8 summit in Canada is prioritising Africa for the first time. While we welcome the promises of support, the summit's resolve will be put to the test in its response to African demands for debt cancellation, a fairer trade deal and increased aid to fight HIV/AIDS.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has now joined ACTSA in a new phase of campaigning to improve access to treatment for HIV/AIDS by lobbying the British government to demand that it lives up to its promise to prioritise Africa. Countries in the Southern Africa region, which is home to one third of the world's HIV-positive population, simply do not have the resources they need to fight AIDS and the response from the international community has been bitterly disappointingly.
