To all the Pambazuka Readers,
I take this time to introduce to you our youth group based in the slums of Nairobi Kenya Known as Kibera slums. For starters, this is one of the largest informal settling in the world and is mainly inhabited by low income earning people.
Within this bigger slum,we saw a need of starting a youth group that shall respond to the needs and concerns of youth given the fact that they had been greatly marginalized. In this regard, likeminded youth came together hence the birth of Kibera Community Youth Programme. It is now one ye r and three months since inception and to clearly say,the going hasn`t been such smooth for us.
We have faced lots of problems ranging from lack of resources to finance our program and operate independently. The biggest handicap have been the inability to acquire resources towards owning our own office for the sake of continuity in our operational activities and effective management.
We have the ideas right with us,our youth are talented in different fields but the problem is getting resources which can be used to harness all these into a viable venture which lead to youth empowerment and ensure self reliant in the end.
With us already is a drama group which we use for HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns as well as drug and child abuse. We are in the process of constituting a football team which will be used for the same purposes as well.
Our potentiality cannot be overlooked with anybody who gets to hear from us,the problem is that we have not received any help as yet and this is greatly worrying us because it is causing a delay in the start up of our planned activities.
We would hereby like to request readers of this newsletter, who have means or can direct us to appropriate places where we can acquire funds for the sake of continuity,to contact us and help us forge forth with our mission in the Kibera Slums. We are open for collaboration and partnership with any willing organization. We look forward to getting response from allover as concerns our plight.
Capacity bulding and vatrious organizational trainings are wellcome as well.
Yours Sincerely,
Fredrick Ouko
