Security officials question RSF correspondent

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has protested over the lengthy interrogation of journalist
Faisal el Bagir, the organisation's correspondent in Sudan, on 8 June 2003,
upon his return from Athens, Greece, where he had attended an international
conference of the future of news media in Iraq.

"The interrogation was clearly aimed at intimidating the journalist and
human rights defender," RSF Secretary-General Robert Ménard said. "We call
on the Sudanese authorities to put a stop to this kind of harassment, which
is completely unjustified."

On his arrival at Khartoum airport in the early hours of 8 June, el Bagir
was detained for two hours by airport security officials who searched his
bags and confiscated his passport and several newspapers. They also told him
to report later the same morning to the National Security Office's Political
Affairs Department. There, he was questioned about his journalistic
activities, his political views, his trip to Athens, his links with the
Sudan Organisation Against Torture (for which he works), the Khartoum Centre
for Human Rights and RSF.

Airport security officials previously arrested el Bagir at his home on 7
October 2002, upon his return from Cairo (see IFEX alert of 9 October 2002).
He was interrogated for several hours about an international freedom of
expression conference he had attended a short while earlier in Dakar. In
2002, the journalist was summoned by security officials several times for
questioning about articles he had written on human rights issues and about
his links with human rights organisations.

Le correspondant de RSF longuement interrogé sur ses activités

(RSF/IFEX) - Faisal el Bagir, journaliste et correspondant de RSF au Soudan,
a été interrogé plusieurs heures, le 8 juin 2003, alors qu'il rentrait
d'Athènes (Grèce), où il avait assisté à une conférence internationale sur
l'avenir des médias en Irak.

"Ce type d'interrogatoire a clairement pour but d'intimider ce journaliste
et défenseur des droits de l'homme. Nous demandons aux autorités soudanaises
de mettre un terme à ce harcèlement qui n'est en aucun cas justifié", a
déclaré Robert Ménard, secrétaire général de RSF.

À son arrivée à l'aéroport de Khartoum, le 8 juin au petit matin, Faisal el
Bagir a été retenu durant deux heures par des membres de la sécurité de
l'aéroport. Ses bagages ont été fouillés, son passeport et plusieurs
journaux confisqués. Intimé de se rendre, en fin de matinée, au département
des affaires politiques du bureau de la Sûreté nationale, il a alors été
interrogé sur ses activités journalistiques, ses opinions politiques, son
voyage à Athènes, ses relations avec la Sudanese Organisation Against
Torture (organisation pour laquelle le journaliste travaille), le Khartoum
Centre for Human Rights, RSF, etc.

Le 7 octobre 2002, el Bagir avait déjà été arrêté à son domicile par des
membres des forces de sécurité de l'aéroport alors qu'il rentrait du Caire
(consulter l'alerte de l'IFEX du 9 octobre 2002). Le journaliste avait été
interrogé plusieurs heures au sujet d'une conférence internationale sur la
liberté d'expression à laquelle il avait participé à Dakar. Courant 2002, le
journaliste avait été convoqué à plusieurs reprises par les forces de
sécurité. Les interrogatoires portaient sur les articles qu'ils avaient
écrits sur les droits de l'homme ou sur ses relations avec des organisations
de défense des droits de l'homme.
