PEWA AWARDS @ ad3 2004
PEWA, the Swahili word for making an offering, also stands for People Earnestly Working for Africa. The PEWA awards acknowledge and reward `Africa's biggest aid donors' - Africans outside the continent and their organizations. The first PEWA awards will be presented at a special evening reception at this year's African Diaspora and Development Day (ad3) on July 3rd held in City Hall's London's Living Room.
The search is on to select those working hardest for Africa so they can be honoured at this glitzy event. You know who they are. They work in small groups (home town associations, alumni groups, civil society organizations etc), achieving much, with little or no money.
Sometimes they have rebuilt their old schools back in Africa or sent back books and other resources. Other times they send medical equipment to hospitals, undertake pressing relief work, or lobby on behalf of various issues. In the UK they run much needed projects around immigration/asylum, they help to resettle new migrants, offer innovative training, language and other cultural programmes, or work in dynamic ways with the young people from their communities.
