Thus the continent still faces major challenges of poverty alleviation and development. However, this can be explained by the deficiencies of the post independent African states in achieving economic development for its citizens, a major challenge for the African Union (AU) and its New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) program. Throughout the world, regional integration has gained momentum and is seen as the panacea to dealing with the shortcomings of the state. This paper seeks to examine Africa's efforts and challenges at building coherent regional groupings and offers lessons for the AU."
