NEW RESEARCH GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG RESEARCHERS FROM DEVELOPING
COUNTRIES
Agriculture for Peace Fellowship Competition
The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and
the International Foundation for Science (IFS) are pleased to announce a new
call for proposals to the Agriculture for Peace Fellowship (APF)
competition. All applications must be received by IFS no later than 30 June,
2005 in order to be considered for support.
Fellowships will be awarded to researchers that are carrying out research
projects that contribute to a better understanding of relationships between
agriculture and human security in sub-Saharan African countries. Please see
the IFS webpage (www.ifs.se [2]) for a more detailed description.
The APF competition is open to young researchers from sub-Saharan African
countries that have obtained at least a Masters degree or the equivalent
research experience. Interested researchers should consult the IFS webpage
for a complete list of eligibility criteria.
The benefits of inclusion in the APF Programme include affiliation to the
UNU-IAS and an affiliated Japanese university, one year technical
supervision support by a UNU-IAS faculty member and academics from
collaborating Japanese universities, and a one-month stay at the UNU-IAS in
Yokohama, Japan. The cost of travel to and stay in Japan will be covered by
the UNU-IAS.
Fellowships are supplementary support provided by UNU-IAS that may be
awarded to researchers that apply for and receive an IFS research grant.

Science and Technology Fellowship Competition
The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and

call for proposals to the Science and Technology Fellowship (STF)
competition. All applications must be received by IFS no later than 30 June,
2005 in order to be considered for support.
The STF competition is open to young researchers from developing countries
that have obtained at least a Masters degree or the equivalent research
experience. Please consult the IFS webpage (www.ifs.se [2]) for a complete list
of eligibility criteria.
Fellowships will be awarded to researchers that are carrying out research
projects relevant for:
* policy for technology transfer to developing countries under
Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs); and
* policy on biotechnology development and transfer to developing
countries.
The benefits of inclusion in the STF Programme include affiliation to the
UNU-IAS and an affiliated Japanese university, one year technical
supervision support by a UNU-IAS faculty member and academics from
collaborating Japanese universities, and a one-month stay at the UNU-IAS in
Yokohama, Japan. The cost of travel to and stay in Japan will be covered by
the UNU-IAS.
