The Congress of South African Trade Unions welcomes the
Pretoria High Court judgement ordering the government to make
Nevirapine available to HIV-positive pregnant women in state
hospitals and clinics which have the capacity to administer its
provision, pending the government’s appeal against the court’s
ruling of December 2001.

COSATU urges the government to provide the medicines as
quickly as possible throughout the country. In those hospitals
and clinics which do not have capacity to administer the drugs,
support and counselling systems should be put in place without
delay, so that the provision of the medicines can rapidly be
expanded to all those who need and request them.

The federation believes that the lives of hundreds of babies will
be saved if this order is carried out now, rather than after the
Constitutional Court has heard the appeal, and therefore urges
the government to comply fully with the court order.
