Job Opening: Africa Research and Policy Associate (Horn, East, and Central Africa)
The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC), a New York based non-profit organization with a $1.5 million annual operating budget, is the only organization in the world specifically dedicated to human rights advocacy for LGBTI people. IGLHRC monitors, documents and responds to human rights violations, advocates for sexual rights, and works in partnership with both community-based and national LGBTI organizations. In the past year, IGLHRC has issued dozens of Action Alerts relating to specific human rights violations, provided partnership and training to activists from Africa, Asia, Central Europe and Latin America, coordinated global advocacy efforts at the UN and at regional human rights bodies, and provided documentation to support the claims of LGBT asylum seekers.
We are currently seeking a committed individual to join us as Africa Research and Policy Associate (Horn, East and Central Africa), for a fixed-term, one-year position. Our program staff works both regionally and thematically. The position will be based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Africa Research and Policy Associate's primary function will be to provide research, writing, and campaign leadership as well as programmatic and administrative support as part of our 3-person Africa Program Team. Reporting to the Africa Specialist, the primary responsibilities of the Africa Research and Policy Associate are to:
. Research and monitor human rights violations in the subregion (Horn, East and Central Africa)
. Develop human rights reports and emergency responses to human rights violations . Assist in the implementation of human rights campaigns, particularly related to religious homophobia and/or human rights challenges for African lesbians . Coordinate communication and partnership with African GLBT organizations in the subregion
QUALIFICATIONS:
. Bachelors or Masters degree. Relevant academic background, including knowledge of international human rights standards and practices . Excellent oral and written communication skills . Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, while remaining focused on quality and timeliness . Prior practical experience working with African LGBT and/or sexual rights movement, preferably with an advocacy organization . Knowledge of sub-Saharan African politics highly desirable . Fluency in English required; French or Swahili highly desirable.
. Ability to travel throughout Africa and to the U.S.
