The Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA) invites applications for three new positions:
1. Managing Editor, CODESRIA Journals©;
2. Managing Editor, CODESRIA Books©;
3. Managing Editor, CODESRIA Monographs and Online publications©.
In recent years, the CODESRIA Publications and Dissemination Programme has undergone a considerable expansion that has translated into a significant increase in the number books, monographs and journals published by the Council, as well as in the organisation's online publication services. This expansion has necessitated the restructuring of the Programme with a view to further cementing the role of CODESRIA as the leading social science scholarly publisher on the African continent. The three new positions of managing editors are designed to boost the publication programme on all fronts.
Under the overall authority of the Executive Secretary and the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Officer (Publications and Dissemination), the managing editors, will be expected to serve primarily as the officers responsible for the day-to-day management of the CODESRIA publications that fall within their portfolio. Each managing editor will be required to play a key role in enhancing the quantity, quality and reach of the different publications assigned them.
The key tasks and responsibilities of the managing editors will include:
- Supervising the publishing process from manuscript submission to final production;
- Editing and proofreading manuscripts in English/French for grammar, style, errors and inconsistencies and crosschecking bibliographic entries according to the in-house style guide;
- Liaising with both in-house and external proofreaders, typesetters, translators, artists and controlling the quality of freelance services, maintaining a database of various consultants and service providers used by the Publications and Dissemination Programme;
- Liaising with authors, contributors and editors of publications under his/her portfolio;
- Sending proofs to authors and resolving editorial queries where needed.
- Performing research, as necessary, to validate accuracy of the contents of manuscripts received;
- Liaising with other CODESRIA programmes staff for the purpose of facilitating the publication process;
- Preparing blurbs, abstracts and summary information for covers and dissemination activities;
- Preparing instructions for typesetting and checking proofs before final production;
- Developing and managing the business side of CODESRIA publications for which they are responsible;
- Monitoring and ensuring regular update of information and content of list portfolio on the CODESRIA website;
- Building relations with authors, publishers and other actors in the book trade;
- Writing regular financial and activity reports on the management of list portfolio.
- Liaising with the CODESRIA Marketing and Distribution officer in the dissemination of list portfolio;
- Ensuring adherence to strict guidelines and deadlines of the Publications and Dissemination Programme.
The managing editors will need to be hands-on, self-motivating and target-oriented individuals requiring minimum supervision. They must also be capable of leading and motivating a team of support staff.
REQUIREMENTS
Candidates for any of the three positions of managing editor available in CODESRIA must:
- Have a sound university education and relevant work experience in a research and/ or publishing environment;
- Have a demonstrable experience of copyediting in an academic/research work environment;
- Be fully conversant with current Information technology and electronic publishing and possess knowledge of the use of ICT tools in research;
- Be fluent either in English, French or Portuguese and have a strong working knowledge of one of the others.
