The Centre for Democracy & Development (CDD) is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to research, training and advocacy on issues of democratisation, development and human security in West Africa. Since it was founded in 1997, CDD has acquired an outstanding reputation as a leading intellectual resource for work on capacity-building and policy-oriented scholarship on democracy, the environment, human and gender rights, security and development, while it has also engaged in interventions through mediation and dialogue in countries undergoing conflict and post-conflict situations.

Director/Chief Executive Officer

The Centre for Democracy & Development (CDD) is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to research, training and advocacy on issues of democratisation, development and human security in West Africa. Since its was found in 1997, CDD has acquired an outstanding reputation as a leading intellectual resource for work on capacity-building and policy-oriented scholarship on democracy, the environment, human and gender rights, security and development, while it has also engaged in interventions through mediation and dialogue in countries undergoing conflict and post-conflict situations. CDD’s work is well-known and respected in West Africa, within civil society circles, governments, regional/continental bodies, such as ECOWAS, African Union, and the United Nations.

The Governing Council of CDD is seeking a Director who will continue the strategic development of the Centre, providing leadership for its research, training, advocacy and operational activities. The successful appointee will also act as external ambassador for the Centre to relevant agencies and organisations within Africa and internationally. Such outstanding candidate, who is an academic with international reputation and senior management experience, must be:

• A talented individual with a crucial management experience and sound record of achievement across the civil society and NGO sectors
• A first class communicator with excellent inter-personal skills and ability to innovate and manage change
• A strategic and critical thinker with strong administrative and organisational skills and commercial acumen
• A policy-oriented scholar-activist well steeped in research and advocacy work, and with a strong understanding of issues concerning regional integration, human security, gender equity, democratisation and development
• An enthusiastic and effective motivator and team builder
• An excellent track record of successful fundraising
• A proven record of international experience
• A bilingual individual (fluent in English and a working knowledge of French) and who is willingness to engage in relevant travels
