Global Fund for Women

The Global Fund is accepting applications for a full-time, salaried Program Officer with a focus on grantmaking in Asia/Oceania. The Program Officer will work primarily with the Program Team in reviewing and managing correspondence from organizations that request support from the Global Fund for Women. The Program Officer will report to the Vice President of Programs & Evaluation and will supervise the Program Associate for Asia/Oceania.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
The Global Fund for Women is an international grantmaking foundation that supports groups working to advance the human rights of women and girls. We work in partnership with groups addressing issues that include but are not limited to: Building Peace & Ending Gender-Based Violence; Advancing Health and Sexual & Reproductive Rights; Expanding Civic & Political Participation; Ensuring Economic & Environmental Justice; Increasing Access to Education; and Fostering Social Change Philanthropy. Since its inception in 1987, the Global Fund has granted over $37 million to 2,500 women’s groups in 160 countries.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Global Fund is accepting applications for a full-time, salaried Program Officer with a focus on grantmaking in Asia/Oceania. The Program Officer will work primarily with the Program Team in reviewing and managing correspondence from organizations that request support from the Global Fund for Women. The Program Officer will report to the Vice President of Programs & Evaluation and will supervise the Program Associate for Asia/Oceania.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Program Officer manages the portfolio of grants for the Global Fund for Women in Asia/Oceania. S/he works as part of a 10-member team to review, manage, and prioritize requests from organizations seeking funding from the foundation. Primary grantmaking responsibilities include: (i) reviewing incoming proposals from groups in the region; (ii) corresponding with appropriate groups to gather further information; (iii) drafting and reviewing decline letters; (iv) seeking opinions and working with Advisory Council members on grant proposals; (v) preparing written summary recommendations to the Board of Directors four times a year; (vi) overseeing all follow-up (payments, contracts, final reports) with groups that have received grants; and (vii) preparing reports and analyses of grantmaking activities of the Global Fund for Women. Additional responsibilities include representing the Global Fund at public events; coordinating linking opportunities between grantees and donors; travel to the region once or twice a year to meet with grantees and/or to develop program initiatives; and working on evaluation and philanthropic education.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires someone who is a team player with a deep commitment to women's issues. Strong international background, regional expertise of Asia/Oceania and strong networks in the region, excellent writing and communications skills, superb organizational skills, and ability to prioritize under pressure are required. The candidate must be comfortable and experienced working with board members, staff, and applicants from overseas. This requires sensitivity, ease in interpersonal communications, and a critical understanding of international development and the issues facing women worldwide. Candidates must be able to manage several tasks simultaneously and should be flexible and willing to assume a range of unanticipated assignments. Supervisory experience is preferred.

Ideal candidates must possess a master’s degree in a relevant field (i.e., women’s studies, international relations, human rights law, etc.) and have four to 10 years of relevant work experience. Candidates must possess excellent knowledge of Macintosh computers, including skills in Microsoft Word, Filemaker Pro and e-mail applications. English language fluency is required, and written and oral proficiency in one or more Asian languages (i.e., Bahasa Indonesian, Chinese, Hindi) is highly desirable. Strong knowledge of the region is a must.

START DATE AND COMPENSATION
The Program Officer projected start date is April, 2005. The Program Officer will work full time. The starting salary range for this position is $50,000 - $60,000, plus benefits.

Applicants will be notified of their status by March 31st, 2005. All applicants must meet the minimum requirements including interest level in international women’s development issues, language, and start date availability. Applicants who are unable to meet these requirements will not be considered.
