RESEARCHER MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA DIVISION

Since its founding in 1978, Human Rights Watch has become the largest
U.S.-based international human rights monitoring and advocacy
organization, known for its in-depth investigations, its incisive and
timely reporting, its innovative and high-profile advocacy campaigns,
and its success in changing the human rights-related policies of the
U.S. and other influential governments. HRW’s Middle East and North
Africa Division (formerly Middle East Watch) was established in 1989 to
monitor human rights in the Middle East and North Africa (from Iran to
Morocco).

DESCRIPTION: The researcher will investigate human rights developments
in a number of Middle East and North Africa countries and work to
publicize and curtail human rights abuses through writing and advocacy.
The researcher will be based in New York, Washington, London or Brussels
and should be prepared to spend periods of time traveling to the region.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:monitoring and
researching human rights developments; conducting fact-finding
investigations into current and past human rights abuses through field
research, and reporting findings regularly; writing and editing reports,
newsletters, appeals, press releases, editorials, articles, and position
papers; devising advocacy strategies for addressing the abuses
documented; raising human rights issues and influencing the human rights
policies of governmental bodies in the Middle East and North Africa, the
United States, the European Union, and at the United Nations through
correspondence and personal contact; responding promptly to queries from
the press, the public and colleagues in the human rights community.

QUALIFICATIONS: A law degree or an advanced degree in international
relations or a related field, as well as experience in human rights work
and field research, are required; a journalism or social sciences
background also is helpful. Candidates should have a background in the
region and excellent oral and written communication skills in both
English and Arabic; a working knowledge of French or other regional
languages is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will be highly
motivated and persistent, well organized, able to work quickly and well
under pressure both independently and as a member of a team, and
demonstrate a commitment to international human rights.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Negotiable, depending on experience. Human Rights
