As part of its mandate, the NDA is carrying out activities to strengthen civil society and to engage civil society in dialogue. For this purpose, a network of strategic NGO and CBO partners will be selected in each province to participate in activities around: Dialogue around Poverty Issues with civil society; Capacity Building of the NGO and CBO sector; Project Formulation & Management; and Impact assessment of Poverty Eradication initiatives.

Tanzanian model launches Aids trust in Namibia

A Tanzanian fashion model, now well known on the catwalks of Europe, has set up a fund to raise money for AIDS projects in Namibia. The Tausi AIDS Trust Fund, named after its model founder Tausi Likokola, was launched in Windhoek at a luncheon attended by leaders of the local business community. Like many AIDS funds, the Tausi AIDS fund will aim mainly at tapping from "corporate social responsibility" budgets of companies.

Lesotho: government generally respected human rights, says report

The recently released annual report on Human Rights Practices in Lesotho for 2002 says the Lesotho government generally respected the human rights of its citizens except for unconfirmed allegations of torture by security forces and credible reports of use of excessive force against detainees by the police. The report was released by United States of America’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour.

LESOTHO: LNDC donates computers to school

The Lesotho National Development Corporation has donated 16 computers to 16 high schools, which have consistently demonstrated outstanding academic performance. The donation was handed over by the LNDC Chief Executive, Sophia Mohapi at LNDC premises on the 11th April 2003.

The tide is turning for thousands of ex-mine workers in Pondoland after a R2,5 million boost from the National Skills Development Fund. Last week the Mining Qualifications Authority of South Africa (Mqasa), in conjunction with the OR Tambo District Municipality, launched the pilot project for ex-mine workers at Emfundisweni Skills Development and Resource Centre.

American talk show host Oprah Winfrey would have shed a tear or two when homeless people at a local care centre here battled for their free pair of takkies. The expensive athletics shoes were donated by the billionaire in December. Winfrey, together with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, donated 50000 gift packs -- including the takkies -- to schoolchildren as part of the Christmas Kindness project.
