The International Human Rights Exchange (IHRE) is seeking a dynamic and energetic full time Project Coordinator to work on this intensive, month-long, international, interdisciplinary course in human rights that is offered each June-July. The IHRE consists of a consortium of 14 partner universities and colleges in Southern Africa and the United States. Project Coordinator
The International Human Rights Exchange (IHRE) is seeking a dynamic and
energetic full time Project Coordinator to work on this intensive,
month-long, international, interdisciplinary course in human rights that
is offered each June-July. The IHRE consists of a consortium of 14
partner universities and colleges in Southern Africa and the United
States. The Project Coordinator is formally employed by the South
African secretariat which is based at the University of Cape Town and is
subject to its personnel and administrative policies. S/He bears day to
day responsibility for planning and delivering the IHRE course according
to the policies of the project, and in a manner that is consistent with
the project's emphasis on human rights, equality, mutual interest and
dignity of all involved parties.
The Project Coordinator works under the guidance of the IHRE's
governance structures, primarily through the course Co-Directors at Bard
College and the University of Cape Town, but also liases with the
Executive Committee who make decisions about the project, the Steering
Committee who guide the project, and the Curriculum Committee who
oversee the academic development of the course.
The position is initially open for an 18 month contract in the next
cycle of funding from the Andrew W. Mellon foundation.
Ideally we are looking for a candidate who will have the necessary
skills to:
· Produce projected budgets and generate quarterly and annual financial
reports
· Hire and supervise staff, both long term regular staff and short term
contract staff.
· Liase with the Curriculum Director to finalise faculty contracts
· Take final decisions and contract with service providers
· Communicate clearly and regularly with the IHRE governance structures
· Plan and provide logistical back up for travel and meetings
· Assist in fundraising activities
· Assist in coordinating IHRE publications such as (but not limited to)
the I'ree Times
· It would be advantageous if the candidate combines these
administrative skills with some experience in any or all of the
following:
o Counselling skills
o Experience dealing with student life issues
o Experience in groupwork / facilitation around identity issues such as
race, class and gender
o Experience working in the field of educational and cross-cultural
exchanges
Specific criteria include:
· Valid tertiary qualification
· A demonstrable commitment to Human Rights
· Computer skills with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office,
Internet and email skills
· Ability to travel and possibly spend 1-2 months a year outside of Cape
Town.
