DJIBOUTI: newspaper editor re-arrested

Reporters sans frontières (RSF) has protested against the re-arrest of newspaper editor Daher Ahmed Farah on 5 June 2003, just two days after his release from custody. The organisation has called on the authorities to release him immediately. The editor of "Le Renouveau" newspaper and head of the opposition party Movement for Democratic Renewal and Development (MRD), Farah is the subject of several libel suits filed by the armed forces.

malawi: Community radio stations told to stop airing news reports

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has ordered community radio stations to stop airing news bulletins, saying the Communications Act forbade such stations from running news programmes. uganda: Third Term: Will Museveni Call Referendum?

Uganda's National Resistance Movement (NRM) government is planning to call a national referendum to decide whether a president can stand for more than two five-year terms, sources said last week. But opposition politicians said it would be difficult to sell the referendum idea, dismissing the exercise as intended to "use the people's name to legitimise decisions already made by the Movement".

zambia: Auditor General's Report Confirms Disappearance of Oil Worth $13.5m

An Auditor General's report has confirmed the reported disappearance of 1,000 oil tankers with US $13.5 million worth of fuel imported between 1999 and 2000. According to a report dated October 31, 2002 and tabled before the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee, the petroleum products destined for Zambia crossed the countries of origin but did not get to Indeni Oil Refinery.

The National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) has received three-four wheel drive vehicles and other equipment as part of a 220,000- dollar grant from the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), a member of the global network of the Soros Foundation.The equipment include computers, video cameras and binding equipment. South Africa: Canadian boost for EC tourism

Six million rand in funding from the Canadian government for a skills development project in the Eastern Cape will focus first on the tourism industry. Announcing the project between the Eastern Cape Technikon and the Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology in Ontario, the director of education and development at the college, Jos Nolle, said it would develop industry-based training strategies at the technikon which will link training to work.

mozambique: Government Renews Commitment to Children's Welfare

The Mozambican government renewed on Sunday its commitment to improve conditions for a healthy and harmonious future for the country's children. The announcement was made by the country's President, Joaquim Chissano, in the central city of Beira, during a ceremony to mark International Children's Day. Chissano acknowledged that there are still many Mozambican children who are deprived of their fundamental rights.

According to SABCnews, the SA Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre Trust has received R8.1m from the National Lottery. The money will be spent on establishing a marine rehabilitation centre in Port Elizabeth. The centre will focus on the rehabilitation and treatment of injured gannets, seals and seabirds and conservation of endangered species found in the region.
