Dear Colleagues,

In preparation for Task Force discussion on ICT for development
in Africa, to be held on 30 September 2002, an online discussion
forum was set up on our website on the theme of "Enhanced
participation and mobilized support for ICT-for-development in
Africa". You may find this forum here:

http://unicttaskforce.org/thirdmeeting/africaforum.as

The discussion will take place from 18 September through 18
October 2002.

The discussion is moderated by Ms. Leslie Wade from the UN
Division of ECOSOC Support and Coordination of the Department of
Economic and Social Affairs. The Moderator has proposed five
questions to initiate the discussion:

1. What are some of the most effective ways of using ICT to
strengthen peace-building activities?

2. What are some of the innovations in ICT that could be used to
take advantage of Africa's comparative advantage in the music and
tourism industries and how can they be used in a practical
manner?

3. What are some of the lessons that can be learned from other
regions regarding the formation and use of diaspora networks to
promote ICT in home countries/regions?

4. What are some of the most effective ways of using ICT to
facilitate healthcare delivery and what are some concrete
examples of telemedicine projects that could be implemented in
African countries given their particular level of development and
cultural norms?

5. Given the depth of poverty in sub-Saharan countries, what are
some of the ICT applications/products/ideas that, for a small
investment, can result in substantial benefits for the small
entrepreneur and have a ripple effect on the local economy?

You may wish to visit the site and, we hope, contribute to the
discussion.

Should you need further information and details you can contact
the ICT TF by fax at (212) 963-2812

Best regards,
