Four journalists missing for past two weeks

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has called on the Liberian authorities to search for four
journalists who have been missing for more than two weeks in the country's
eastern and central regions, where government forces are battling rebels of
the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Development (LURD) movement. The
missing journalists are Grody Dorbor, editor of "The Inquirer" newspaper,
Oscar Dolo, Nyahn Flomo and William Quiwea, all local correspondents for the
radio station Talking Drum Studio-Liberia.

While expressing concern over their fate, RSF Secretary-General Robert
Ménard said, "At a time when the population is the victim of widespread
attacks by armed rebels, the government must take effective steps to
guarantee the safety of journalists, who provide the crucial service of
informing Liberians." Ménard called for a thorough and impartial
investigation into the four journalists' disappearance.

Dorbor and Quiwea had travelled to Zwedru, in the southeastern county of
Grand Gedeh. Flomo is a correspondent in Ganta, in the eastern-central
region of Nimba. Dolo was in Gbarnga, in the central county of Bong, at the
time of his disappearance. He fled to Ganta after fighting broke out.

"The Inquirer" newspaper and Talking Drum Studio-Liberia radio station have
not heard from their journalists since the LURD attacked several provincial
capitals.

Quatre journalistes portés disparus depuis plus de deux semaines

(RSF/IFEX) - Grody Dorbor, directeur de publication du journal "The
Inquirer", Oscar Dolo, Nyahn Flomo et William Quiwea, correspondants de la
radio Talking Drum Studio-Liberia, sont portés disparus depuis plus de deux
semaines dans l'est et le centre du pays, où des combats opposent les
rebelles du LURD (Libériens unis pour la réconciliation et la démocratie) et
les forces gouvernementales.

RSF exprime sa vive préoccupation et demande aux autorités de tout mettre en
oeuvre afin qu'une enquête sérieuse et impartiale soit immédiatement menée
pour retrouver les journalistes. "Alors que la population est déstabilisée
par les multiples attaques des rebelles armés, les autorités doivent prendre
des mesures effectives pour assurer la sécurité des représentants de la
presse, précieux informateurs pour les Libériens" a déclaré Robert Ménard,
secrétaire général de l'organisation.

Dorbor et Quiwea s'étaient rendus à Zwedru, dans le comté du Grand Gedeh
(sud-est du pays). Flomo est quant à lui correspondant à Ganta, dans la
région du Nimba (centre-est). Dolo se trouvait à Gbarnga, dans le comté du
Bong (centre), et avait fui à Ganta, à la suite des premiers affrontements.
Depuis les assauts du LURD dans les diverses capitales provinciales, les
deux rédactions n'ont reçu aucune nouvelle de leurs reporters.
