Are you ready to work with poor people as a force for change in addressing the causes of poverty, suffering and injustice, and alleviating their symptoms? We are looking for someone like you to fill the position of Media and Communications Officer.
You will be the country lead on media and communications for the Darfur crisis as well as serve as the primary Oxfam International field based spokesperson for all affiliate media on the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. You will support programme in identifying messages for communication as part of media/advocacy strategy on Darfur crisis and future strategies on relating to North/South Sudan. You will research and write materials and provide visual images of the Darfur humanitarian crisis to support Oxfam’s media, policy and advocacy work, fundraising and other internal and external communications.
Your role will also include assisting programme staff in providing field based information and analysis in support of Oxfam’s policy and advocacy work, facilitating journalists visits to Oxfam’s humanitarian programme in Darfur, identifying public media messages and regular news angles on the Darfur crisis for use by Oxfam GB and Oxfam International affiliates and responding to information requests from journalists on Darfur and North Sudan as well as give and arrange background briefings and on the record interviews. You will have proven ability to capacity build and assist programme teams in the regular monitoring and analysis of political, economic and social developments in Darfur/Sudan and their impact on the wider humanitarian situation.
You will have considerable experience and proven success in development and delivery of media and advocacy strategies. Knowledge of international and national mass media and a track record of success and achievement in media work. You will be familiar with and understand development issues and the role of NGOs in development, humanitarian and advocacy work. You will posses excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent negotiation skills and the ability to influence other. You will work in multi-national, multi-cultural team and be able to develop good working relationships. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential, whilst the ability to speak Arabic language will be an advantage.
The post is offered on six month fixed contract (renewable) with a starting salary of £18,250 per annum net.
