A Daily News crew of reporter Henry Makiwa, Photographer Gally Kambeu and
driver Trust Maswela was arrested on 19 November 2002 when they were
covering a demonstration by parents and students who were protesting against the
alleged rape of a girl by a deputy school head in the suburb of Marimba in Harare.

NEWS CREW DETAINED

A Daily News crew of reporter Henry Makiwa, Photographer Gally Kambeu and
driver Trust Maswela was arrested on 19 November 2002 when they were
covering a demonstration by parents and students who were protesting against
alleged rape of a 13 year old girl by a deputy school head in the suburb of
Marimba in Harare.

The news crew was arrested at 11 am together with other demonstrators and
was released after four hours in police custody at Marimba police station.
An officer at the police station told the Daily News that the three could
not produce particulars that they were Daily News employees. The news crews
together with other demonstrators were taken at 3 pm to the Harare Central
Police Station Law and Order Maintenance Section were they were released
without any charges preferred.

Padare/Enkundleni, a men's pressure group against gender violence, organized
the demonstration against the alleged rape case. The group is demanding the
immediate removal of the alleged culprit from the school.
