Weekly Times closed down just two months after launch

Reporters Without Borders today condemned the announcement by the Zimbabwean
government's Media and Information Commission (MIC) on 25 February that it
is closing the independent Weekly Times for a year for "violating the Access
to Information and Protection of Privacy Act."

"As usual, the Zimbabwean authorities find any old pretext for gagging
independent media that might spoil things for them at the height of an
election campaign," the press freedom organization said, calling it "the
second serious press freedom violation in two weeks," after three foreign
press correspondents were forced to flee the country.

"The government does not hesitate to step up the repression one month before
the 31 March legislative elections," the organization added, "although it
ratified the Southern African Development Community's protocol on principles
and rules for democratic elections which ought, in theory, to guarantee
press freedom."

MIC chairman Tafataona Mahoso, who had threatened to close the Weekly Times
in January just a week after the first issue came out, said its licence was
being withdrawn because of a false statement and the failure of its owners
to reveal facts. The newspaper had tricked him when it registered its
licence by hiding certain aspects of its editorial line, Mahoso alleged.

According to its statutes, the Weekly Times is a privately-owned news weekly
focussing on development issues.

It is the fourth privately-owned, independent newspaper to be closed in less
than two years, following the Daily News, the Daily News On Sunday and The
Tribune.

Reporters sans frontières s'insurge contre la décision de la Commission des
médias et de l'information (MIC), organe public de régulation de la presse
au Zimbabwe, de fermer, le 25 février 2005, l'hebdomadaire indépendant
Weekly Times pour une durée d'un an, pour " violation de la loi sur l'accès
à l'information et la protection de la vie privée " (AIPPA).

" Comme à l'accoutumée, les autorités zimbabwéennes cherchent n'importe quel
prétexte pour museler les médias indépendants susceptibles de leur faire de
l'ombre en pleine campagne électorale, a déclaré l'organisation. C'est la
deuxième grave violation à la liberté de la presse en deux semaines, après
que trois correspondants de la presse étrangère ont été obligé de fuir le
pays. "

" Le gouvernement n'hésite pas à intensifier la répression un mois avant les
élections législatives du 31 mars. Reporters sans frontières rappelle que
Harare a ratifié le protocole sur les principes et les règles régissant les
élections démocratiques de la Communauté de développement de l'Afrique
australe (SADC) qui devrait, en théorie, garantir la liberté de la presse. "

Selon le président de la MIC, Tafataona Mahoso, qui avait déjà menacé de
fermer le journal en janvier dernier, une semaine après son premier numéro,
sa licence lui a été retirée pour " fausse déclaration et non-révélation de
faits par ses propriétaires ". Le journal l'aurait " trompé " lors de
l'enregistrement de sa licence, " en lui cachant certains aspects de sa
ligne éditoriale ".

Selon ses statuts, le Weekly Times est un hebdomadaire privé d'actualité axé
sur les questions de développement.

Le Weekly Times est la quatrième publication privée indépendante fermée en
moins de deux ans, après le Daily News, le Daily News On Sunday et The
Tribune.
