On August 24, 2001, UMWA launched a new community radio station that will be a forum for debating gender issues. The station, 101.7 Mama FM, will cover women's issues as well as news of importance to other marginalized groups.

The defence ministers of Uganda and Rwanda have ended a meeting in the Ugandan border town of Kabale, agreeing to try to reach an amicable solution to rising tensions between their two states.

A Ugandan government diplomat to the United Nations, Catherine Otiti, on Tuesday told a committee of the General Assembly that "the rights of children are the supreme priority in all programme processes in Uganda", and that the government was particularly
concerned about their situation in northern and western parts of the
country.

The Co-ordinator Uganda Debt Network, Zie Gariyo has been shot. Mr. Gariyo is reported to have been shot by gunmen late last evening and it has not yet been established whether they were mere robbers or an attempt to assassinate him. He is now lying in Mulago Hospital in critical condition.

As many as 27 schools in Kasese, Uganda have been closed as they lacked qualified teachers and basic facilities such as toilets, says a news report.
