The Program Officer for Human Rights will be responsible for developing, monitoring and evaluating a program of grantmaking to strengthen respect for and realization of economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights in the Middle East and North Africa. The program currently focuses on increasing the effectiveness of human rights protection, improving access to law and legal protection of rights, and promoting the cultural legitimacy of human rights.

Egypt's divorce system discriminates against women and undermines their right to end a marriage, Human Rights Watch said in a new report released on World Aids Day. The Committee to Protect Journalists has condemned a vicious attack on Abdel Halim Kandil, an editor and columnist at the opposition weekly Al-Arabi. The attack occurred just before dawn on November 2, after Kandil's colleagues dropped him off near his home in Cairo, according to local sources and press reports. Before entering his apartment building, Kandil was confronted by four men who beat, blindfolded and forced him into a car, sources told CPJ.

The Cairo Institute of Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) uses arts and literature to engage people in the human rights debate and to demonstrate that human rights are celebrated in Arab cultures. CIHRS seeks out philosophers and artists who understand the debate between Islam and human rights and who are motivated to respond to conservative elements.
